Save the Granite Island fairy Penguin
The Fairy Penguin population on Granite Island is counted annually by a team of dedicated volunteers and staff from the Penguin Research and Conservation, Granite Island Nature Park. There has been a serious decline in numbers since 2001 when 1,548 individual were counted to 2010 when only 146 individual were found. Nightly count data has also shown a decrease in numbers. Things are getting critical; the penguin population is in crisis. The big question is why has the penguin population declined? The decline may be linked to an increase in the population of New Zealand fur seals, reduction in food sources, introduced predators, tourism or global warming. At the moment research is being conducted to determine the cause of the population decline, which will enable more effective management. West Island, only five kilometres away had a thriving colony only five years ago, it now has little to no penguins remaining. We are facing the very real possibility of the same thing happening on Granite Island. Penguins tend not to recolonise, so when they are gone, they probably won’t come back in a hurry, if ever. To loose this iconic Victor Harbour species would be such a shame. I and many other people I’m sure would have fond memories of the Granite Island Penguins. I remember as a child searching the rock crevices with the excitement and anticipation of seeing a penguin. Now most of those crevices are empty and children may never again know the same joy I did. The loss of the fairy Penguin to Granite Island would be a huge blow to tourism as well as the environment. Over 35000 people a year visit Granite Island to view penguins on penguin tours each year. Most people eat and many sleep over in Victor Harbor, this will create a significant loss to the town. We need to act now if we want the penguins to survive!! - Rec by Friends of Mount Gambier , Friends of Victor Harbor , Alpha Training , Re…

Meet some of our penguins
Meet Arnie (sometimes referred to as Annie), he had been abandoned by his parents and was in a bad way when he was brought to us, with his sister Alice, on the 4th September, 2009.He was just 4 weeks old and weighed only 390g. She had no feathers on the back of her head, (as you can see in the photo) and we had to put sunscreen on his skin to stop him from getting sunburned. When his feathers finally grew, they were a different density to all the other ones.
